Help your student succeed by consistently being on time to school.  When students are just a few minutes late they can miss out on important learning opportunities such as class huddles, morning announcements, reminders to turn in homework.  On time students are successfull.  Student attendance is one of the most common predictors of academic achievement. Students who participate fully in school activities will have more opportunities to achieve academically.  Here are some things parents can do to help their students be on time every day.

  • Establishing and keeping a schedule; children thrive on routine
  • Going to bed and waking up earlier
  • Preparing for the morning the night before by laying out outfits, packing backpacks, and pre-packing lunches
  • If work schedules conflict, investigate other means of transportation, such as carpooling with other families

The California PBIS Coalition has recognized Capri at the Silver level.

What is PBIS:

PBIS is a school-wide behavior support of all students. PBIS calls on schools to teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that kids can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. A hallmark of a school using PBIS is that everyone knows what’s appropriate behavior.

Capri has been recognized for reflecting excellence in measuring and implementing the core features of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

Did you know:

• Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

• Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.

• Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.

• Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.

• Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

What you can do:

• Set a regular bed time and morning routine.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

• Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.

• Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick. Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.

• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.

• Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent. • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

Mrs. Eshoff, Capri's Office/Health Assistant, has many talents.  She is an avid reader, an amazing Nana to her granddaughter Clara, and she is a musician.  She plays clarinet and handbells.  She delighted Ms. Nielsen's third grade class with a short concert.  Check out the video for a brief look at her performance.

Before pursuing her passion as a teacher Mrs. Vander Kooi was a competitive swim coach for a local Bay Area Swim Team. During her time at SJSU she completed her student teaching in First and Fifth grade at two other Campbell Union School District Schools.

Mrs. Vander Kooi enjoys being with her family, her husband, their two daughters, and two dogs.  She also enjoys spending time outside hiking, camping, and going to the beach. One of her favorite things to do is watching her daughters pursue their passions of swimming, surfing, and dance. She is looking forward to joining the Capri family as a faculty member and to continue the excitement of learning for all students at the school.
