Employee Spotlight - Meet Ms. Faso

Ms. Faso is new to Capri this year.

Hello! My name is Summer Faso, and I am the 3rd through 5th grade SDC teacher. I was born and raised in San Jose with a single mother, who was also a teacher, and a sister with cerebral palsy. My sister and I both grew up with an IEP, so I understand where my students and their siblings come from as disabled persons and a sibling to a disabled sister. I went to California State University, Monterey Bay where I received my bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Kinesiology with an emphasis on Human Movement. I went to San Jose State University where I received my Extensive Support Needs Educational Specialist Credential with an Autism Authorization. Currently, I am finishing my master's degree in Accessible (Special) Education where I am researching the perceptions of general education teachers towards including students with extensive support needs. I have been in education for the past 12 years between volunteering, being an instructional assistant, and teaching. My "why" for teaching stemmed from seeing the ableism, classism, and racism in the accessible education system growing up, volunteering, and seeing my sister's classroom. I strive to be the teacher that can change the lives of my students to allow them to be their neurodivergent selves, teach them to advocate for their needs/injustices, and advocate for my students when they are not able to yet. I love seeing the progress, milestones, and joy of learning from every single student and being able to enjoy it with staff and their parents/guardians.
In my free time, I love to sing in my church choir, perform in and watch musicals, hike/spend time in nature, craft, go on Disney trips, public speak about social/disability justice, and spend time with loved ones.  A fun fact that I would like to share is that I love going to concerts of 70s/80s singers/bands with my family. I can't wait to meet you and get to know you this school year!
